HAIP Local Awards 2022-2023
Member of the Year
HAIP's hard working Treasurer, Joshua German, was the well deserved recipient of the Member of the Year award. Josh wore two hands, so to speak, as he took over the role as Treasurer for HAIP mid-term, while Treasurer for the Region VII Conference that HAIP hosted in Honolulu in April 2022. Josh worked long days and late nights collecting/depositing checks, reconciling accounts, taking calls, and sitting in countless meetings. HAIP is so thankful for Josh and his continued service and commitment to our association, particularly this 2022-2023 term!
Corporate Partner of the Year
Once again Zephyr Insurance Company truly demonstrated their support to HAIP this 2022-2023 term and HAIP member and Zephyr manager, Leslie Door graciously accepted the award on their behalf.. Zephyr Insurance was hugely instrumental in facilitating CE classes this term that included a Hurricane themed CE course for the Region VII Conference held in Honolulu. HAIP is so grateful to have supportive companies such as Zephyr Insurance and their employees, who continuously donate and show up to HAIP sponsored events!
Region VII Conference 2023
HAIP was the hosting association at the well-attended Region VII Conference in Honolulu, which HAIP had not hosted since 2012. The awards presentation was held on Saturday evening at the Awards Banquet where HAIP was awarded the Jeffrey Nordhaus Memorial Award for Education and the E. C. Smith Jr. Memorial Award for Community Action. Our own Maria Carvalho won the Region VII CWC Speak-Off competition award.
A big thank you goes to the committee chairs for Education Justin Whedbee and Leslie Door, as well as the Community Relations chair, David Heard with the assistance from Jodi Keliinoi Smith for their hard work and dedication to HAIP this term. Also, a BIG mahalo to our Awards committee chair, Charlene "Chuck" Mizumoto, who completed and submitted the award applications, for which, in part, is a huge key in winning these awards.
Region VII Conference 2022
HAIP was well represented at the Region VII Conference, which for the first time, was conducted as a "hub" the day before the IAIP National Convention in Louisville, KY. The awards presentation was held on Friday evening after the business meeting that included the CWC Speak-Off competition.
HAIP was awarded the Roy Pasini Memorial Award for outstanding Public Relations Activities. At the last minute, HAIP's Mark Coberly, stepped up and agreed to represent Hawaii for the CWC Speak-Off competition and won. He went on to represent Region VII at the National Convention's CWC Speak-Off competition among 3 other contestants.

Congratulations to the amazing Public Relations Committee Champions for a job well done and to our members who participated in the activities offered this term.
HAIP Local Awards 2019-2020
The HAIP term 2019-2020 started off great and then turned into an unprecedented term with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. And as the world, the country, and the state of Hawaii all shutdown and we all went into lockdown, HAIP continued with meetings and activities, albeit mostly done virtually. With that said, there were two members of HAIP who stood out and went above and beyond the call of duty during the most challenging of circumstances.
A huge congratulations to:
Leslie Door the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award
and
Martin Beardeaux for the Award of Member of the Year
Both of your commitment and hard work were much appreciated and needed during this challenging year . . . . Mahalo nui!
Region VII Conference 2020
Hawaii has always been well represented at Regional conference and 2020 was no exception as HAIP had 6 members who had committed to attending the conference. Unfortunately, HAIP was unable to attend the conference due to travel restrictions resulting from COVID-19. Nonetheless, HAIP was awarded the following awards:
Roy Pasini Memorial Award for Public Relations
Public Relations activities – Social Media pages such as Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter pages promoting the association and individual members’ activities. Association members speaking on insurance and /or association related subjects to other industry organizations (CPCU/HIIA All Industry Day, Joint Meetings with CPCU, RIMS) are some of the criteria.

A big 'MAHALO’ to each member, their employers and our local Corporate Partners who support HAIP’s mission, vision and purpose!

Several public and private school students in grades 7-10 submitted essays for this year's topic: Kapu Aloha (to act with restraint, love, and understanding) when faced with confrontation or opposition, which Eddie Aikau practiced as a Ka'i (proctector, guardian) of Waimea Bay and the Hawaiian culture. The students were to provide examples of these values in Eddie's life.

HAIP members Chenise Blalock, Janine Carvalho and Mark Coberly joined the Hawaii CPCU Society Chapter in a community service project at the He'eia Fishpond assisting Paepae o He'eia, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for and restoring the He'eia Fishpond. The task of the day included moving rocks and coral by filling buckets and caring across the water. Cutting and pulling out invasive mangrove and limu removal.
The work was physically rigorous but very rewarding and provided an opportunity to work side by side with other insurance professionals. Lunch of kalua pork and cabbage was served by the staff at Paepae o He'eia.
March of Dimes - March for Babies
HAIP members, Mark Coberly and Charlene "Chuck" Mizumoto joined hundreds of others in the March for Babies sponsored by the March of Dimes Hawaii. Mark raised over $600.00 in donations for this year's walk!
March of Dimes - Volunteers at Dave & Busters Event

2018 'Eddie Would Go' Essay Contest Judging Session
Each year HAIP members are invited to volunteer as judges by the Board of Directors of the Eddie Aikau Foundation and the Aikau Family for the annual "Eddie Would Go" Essay Writing Contest. Students from public and private schools from grades 7 thru 10 participate in writing essays. Essays submitted are in both English and Hawaiian. Over 300 essays were submitted this year. Here was this year's topic:
Eddie Aikau was a legendary surfer and lifeguard who loved his Family and his culture. He put the needs of others before his own on a daily basis. Throughout his life, Eddie always felt that it was his kuleana (responsibility) to kōkua (to help) those in need. Provide examples of how you feel the Hawaiian values of kuleana & kōkua were reflected in Eddie's life & his actions.
One of the biggest concerns for our community today is the problem of homelessness, which has a terrible impact on the lives of children. E kōkua i nā kānaka hale ‘ole is the Hawaiian phrase meaning to “help the homeless”.
What issues do you think contribute to people becoming homeless and how would you use the values of kuleana & kōkua to address these issues? Provide examples.

Thank you to Charlene Mizumoto for coordinating this opportunity of Community Service.
Public RelationsOur public relations committee offers fun events, such as our industry fashion show. However, the hallmark of this committee is our Confidence While Communicating (CWC) program designed to teach the skills necessary to prepare and deliver oral presentations. Candidates first compete at the local level, with the winners progressing to the Regional levels, culminating at the International Convention. This is a competition to recognize the best speaker completing the CWC educational program. HAIP offers the CWC course in the fall of each year in preparation of the local Speak-Off Contest in November.

Confidence While Communicating 2022-2023
A call went out to all HAIP members who had previously completed the CWC course asking one to represent Hawaii at the Region VII Conference CWC Speak-Off competition held in April 2022 in Honolulu, HI. Maria Carvalho stepped up to the plate and eagerly agreed to represent Hawaii. In a few short months she wrote an amazing 3-minute speech that she practiced with the assistance of prior speak-off competitors and winners, Chenise Blalock and Mark Coberly, up until the week of the competition.
Maria's performance was spectacular, to say the least, and she won walking away with the prize! HAIP and the members of the Hawaii Council could not be more proud of Maria!
Mahalo nui Maria for your continued commitment to HAIP and IAIP!
Confidence While Communicating 2021-2022
For a second time in HAIP history, the CWC course was held virtually, as well as our local HAIP Speak-Off Competition that was held during the November 18, 2021 membership meeting. HAIP had two amazing students and new HAIP members Janine Togikawa and Saskia Nienhuis take the course and particpate in the 2021-2022 Speak-Off Competition.
Our congratulations to Saskia Nienhuis for winning the Speak-Off Competition. It was a difficult competition for the judges as both participants did an amazing performance delivering their prepared 3-minute and 1-minute impromptu speeches. We are very proud of both students! Saskia was not able to attend the Region VII Conference and compete in the Speak-Off competition in June 2022 in Louisville, KY. Therefore, Mark Coberly, who taught the 2021-2022 HAIP CWC Course, took her place at the Region VII Conference and won! Mark went on to represent Region VII at the International Convention Speak-Off competition that was held the following day in Louisville.
A special thank you for making the CWC course and Speak-Off Competition happen this year goes to Shane Pope, our Public Relations Committee Champion, and Mark Coberly for teaching the CWC course with assistance from Chenise Blalock and Katharine Nohr.
Confidence While Communicating 2020-2021
This was a first for HAIP as well as IAIP . . . a virtual CWC Speak-Off competition. HAIP / IAIP would not let a world pandemic stop one of the most important classes and events to occur this term. Both the CWC class and the Speak-Off competition were held virtually. HAIP members Rachel Dowell, Jodi Keliinoi, and Martha Norbriga accepted the challenge of taking the virtual CWC course taught by Chenise Blalock with assistance from Mark Coberly.
On November 12, 2020 HAIP held their first virtual CWC competition with Rachel Dowell and Jodi Keliinoi competing. Both contestants did an amazing job and as there can only be one winner, Jodi took the prize and went on to represent HAIP at the Region VII Conference.
On March 13, 2021 Jodi Keliinoi participated in the Region VII CWC virtual Speak-Off competition and delivered an excellent 3-minute prepared speech and a 1-minute impromptu speech. We are proud to announce that Jodi won that competition and will be representing Region VII at the International Convention held in Orlando, FL.
Confidence While Communicating 2019-2020
Congratulations to Maria Carvalho our CWC Champion for the 2019-2020 term. Maria competed in the local HAIP Speak-Off against fellow HAIP members, Derrick Miyasato and Katharine Nohr. Maria will go on to represent Hawaii at the IAIP Region VII Conference in Vancouver, WA in March 2020.
Confidence While Communicating (CWC) 2018-2019

SafetyAs insurance professionals, HAIP is concerned about safety, because we understand that by making driving, work, public and home environments safe, lives are saved and injuries prevented. This drives down insurance claims and lowers premiums. Each December, HAIP sponsors a public high school essay writing contest on safety topics, such as distracted driving. Three students are honored at our membership meeting luncheon, at which we present a special guest speaker. In 2017, Honolulu Chief of Police Susan Ballard attended and congratulated our student winners.

This year HAIP did things a little different, primarily because of COVID. Rather than a safety essay contest we did a safety photography contest under the inspiration and direction of the Safety Committee Champion, Roel Espiritu. The contest rules contained the following guidelines:
- Photographs must be the original work of the student.
- Photo file sizes must be between 4MB to 10MB
- Written descriptions of photos are to be typed using a legible font up to 50 words.
- Photographs must be about, or have to do with, ‘Safety and Health...Pandemic’ – for example, students can touch on risks, activities, physical/mental health, and preventions while at home, out and about, and at school.
- Photography artwork should have a title (be creative).
- The student’s first and last name, school name, grade level, and teacher’s name must accompany the completed photo artwork.
The winners of the 2020 Saftey Photo Contest were:
- First Place: Kaylen Landry, Mililani High School, Grade 11
- Second Place: Reyn Nishimura, Mililani HIgh School, Grade 12
- Third Place: Jared Toledo, Mililani Hight School, Grade 9
Congratulations to these amazing students, their teachers, and parents!

HAIP received a number of essays on the topic of "Distraction" – walking, driving, or whatever type of distraction the students decided. Each essay was between 450-500 words. The judges scored each essay based on originality, storytelling, and relevance to the topic.
